Are Holidays for the Dogs? 1

Are holidays for the dogs?  This common phrase is really a rhetorical question. As the holidays arrive – we will spend time with friends and family, eating and giving gifts.  And for many dog lovers like you, dogs are a member of the family.  So when we ask, are holidays for the dogs, we are really asking are the holidays for us, for our family.  The answer to that is a resounding yes!  The holidays are a time for reflection, relaxation, and enjoying the company of others. Although this can be something far from the characteristics of many other pets, this is undoubtedly something dogs are naturally great at doing.  It is from our four-legged friends that we can learn many lessons, not the least of which is just how to “be”.  How to live in the moment, and to truly enjoy being in the company of others (with lots of good food).  After all can you think of anyone who can do this better than Man’s best friend?

For many dogs though, there will be no joy. No family, no home, no heat, and no food.  Our hearts perpetually break for all those haven’t been saved, haven’t had a chance at their happy ever after, and haven’t had the opportunity to teach us what the holidays are really about – family.

While we are on the topic of the holidays, an ingrained part of the holidays is gift giving, so it worth reflecting on an important and poignant slogan, which is now 35 years old, but is as true today as it was the day it was created.  “A dog is for life, not just for Christmas”.  While dogs are gifts,  they should not be given as one.  With every dog comes a lifetime commitment, “With us, you will have a forever home, and forever have our love.”

So as you get ready to spend the holidays with others consider opening your heart and home to a rescue dog who will be forever grateful.  God Bless!
